6 simple steps to clean up mould in your HDB

  • 2 min reading time
Mould growth can be a common problem in HDB flats due to the humid weather in Singapore. Mould not only looks unsightly, but it can also have negative impacts on your health and the structural integrity of your home. In this context, it is important to understand the causes of mould growth and how to prevent and get rid of it. By taking proactive measures, you can help maintain a healthy and comfortable living environment in your HDB flat.Wear protective gear: As mentioned earlier, make sure to wear protective gear such as gloves, a mask, and eye protection to avoid exposure to mould spores. This is especially important for those with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions.
  1. Identify the source: Mould needs moisture to grow, so identifying and fixing the source of moisture is essential to prevent further mould growth. Common sources of moisture in HDB flats include leaks, poor ventilation, and high humidity levels. Once the source is identified, fix the problem as soon as possible.

  2. Clean the area: Mix one part bleach to four parts water, or use a commercial mould remover, to clean the affected area. Scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush to remove as much of the mould as possible. Be sure to cover the entire affected area and allow the solution to sit for 10-15 minutes. This will ensure that the solution has enough time to penetrate the mould and kill it.

  3. Rinse and dry: After scrubbing the area, rinse it with clean water and dry it thoroughly. Use a fan or dehumidifier to speed up the drying process. It's important to ensure that the area is completely dry before painting or applying Pico X anti-mould coating to prevent future mould growth.

  4. Dispose of contaminated materials: If any materials such as wallpaper, carpet, or drywall are contaminated with mould, it's best to discard them to prevent further mould growth. Properly dispose of the materials following the guidelines set by your local authorities.

  5. Prevent future mould growth: Once the area is clean and dry, apply a mould-resistant paint or Pico X anti-mould coating to help prevent future mould growth. These products create a protective barrier that inhibits the growth of mould and mildew.

If the mould growth is severe or covers a large area, it's best to seek professional help from a mould remediation specialist. They have the expertise and equipment to safely and effectively remove mould from your HDB walls.
